The 4G cellular camera for properties without internet
Most CCTV cameras assume an existing local network. They connect to a router, an NVR, and the world via your fixed-line internet. That assumption falls apart at the farm gate two hours from the nearest town, the building site that does not have a fibre line yet, the holiday cabin off the grid, the agricultural pump house in a field. None of these have a router. Many do not even have mains power.
The Hikvision DS-2CFS04/4G solves the connectivity half of that problem. It is a cellular IP camera with a built-in SIM card slot. You insert a 4G SIM (any major South African network), the camera connects directly to the mobile network, and the footage and notifications are accessible from your phone or laptop anywhere with internet, exactly as if it were on a fixed-line installation.
Pair it with a solar panel and battery for power, and you have a fully standalone monitoring position with no fixed infrastructure required. We install these on farms, smallholdings with remote outbuildings, holiday properties at the coast, building sites, and any situation where a fixed-line CCTV install is genuinely impossible.
What this camera is actually good at
- Built-in 4G LTE modem. Native cellular connectivity, no separate router required at the camera site.
- Standard SIM card slot. Works with any major South African network SIM (MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom, Rain).
- 4MP resolution. Sharp enough for identification at residential and small-property distances.
- Wide 2.8mm lens. 102° horizontal view from a single mount.
- Built-in microphone and speaker. Two-way audio over the cellular connection.
- Hik-Connect app integration. Live view, recorded footage playback, and push notifications, all over the cellular connection.
- Local microSD card recording. Footage stored on the camera itself; no NVR required.
- Compatible with solar power solutions. Works as a standalone solar-powered monitoring station.
Where this camera belongs
- Farms and smallholdings watching gates, pump houses, equipment sheds, and livestock kraals far from the main house
- Building and construction sites where fixed internet is not yet installed
- Holiday homes and cabins in remote coastal or bushveld locations
- Agricultural infrastructure like irrigation pump houses, water tanks, and solar farms
- Off-grid solar installations as standalone perimeter monitoring
- Remote monitoring of vacant land being watched for activity ahead of development or sale
Important: Data costs add up
4G cellular CCTV consumes mobile data continuously when the camera is streaming live or uploading to the cloud. We typically configure these cameras for event-based upload only (push notifications with snapshot, with full footage stored locally on the SD card and only retrieved on demand). That keeps monthly data costs reasonable. Fixed live-streaming over 4G can run into hundreds of rands per month in data alone if not configured carefully.
Solar power: the natural pairing
- The Solar Caddy 100S-BR is the smaller-capacity solar power kit for cellular cameras.
- The Solar Caddy 200S-BR is the larger-capacity option for sites with more demanding usage or longer winter daylight gaps.
If you want to compare or supplement
- The DS-2CD2186G2H-ISU 2.8mm is a step-up wired 8MP option for fixed-line installations.
- The DS-2CD2141G0-LIU 2.8mm is the wired 4MP turret-style alternative.
- The DS-2CD2141G0-LIU 4mm is the same with a tighter lens.
For sites with both 4G cameras and fixed-line infrastructure, the DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR can integrate the 4G cameras alongside the wired ones. Our home CCTV installation guide covers system design.
Specialist setup for specialist sites
4G cellular CCTV requires careful setup: SIM provisioning and APN configuration, data-usage management, mobile alert configuration, and (in solar installations) battery and panel sizing for the local conditions. We do that work as standard on every cellular install, with site visits available across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, Johannesburg, and the surrounding rural areas.
