What is the difference between an NVR and a DVR?
An NVR (Network Video Recorder) connects to IP cameras over Ethernet network cable. A DVR connects to analogue cameras over coaxial cable. They are not interchangeable — IP cameras need an NVR, Turbo HD analogue cameras need a DVR. For new installations we recommend IP + NVR for the better AI feature set and 4K capability.
What does PoE NVR mean and do I need one?
A PoE NVR has Ethernet ports that supply power directly to IP cameras over the same network cable — no separate power supplies needed at each camera. This significantly simplifies installation and is recommended for almost all residential and small commercial setups. Non-PoE NVRs are used when cameras are powered separately, typically for larger installations with managed PoE switches.
How many channels do I need on my Hikvision NVR?
Match channel count to your camera count plus headroom for expansion. A 4-camera system on a 4-channel NVR has no room to grow. Same setup on an 8-channel NVR gives space to add 4 more cameras later. We sell 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 channel NVRs to suit any property — from townhouses through to large commercial sites.
Do Hikvision NVRs support AcuSense AI?
Yes. Modern Hikvision NVRs work with AcuSense IP cameras out of the box, applying human and vehicle classification at the camera and storing the metadata at the NVR for smart playback search. For premium commercial sites with face recognition and licence plate recognition requirements, the iDS DeepinMind series adds NVR-level AI processing.
How much hard drive storage do I need?
Storage depends on camera count, resolution and recording mode. A typical 8-camera 4MP IP system recording 24/7 needs around 4TB for 30 days of footage. AcuSense recording (only on motion) can reduce this by 50% or more. We size the hard drive to your retention requirement during the free site inspection.
Can I view my Hikvision NVR remotely?
Yes. Every Hikvision NVR works with the Hik-Connect mobile app and Hik-Central management software for live viewing, playback, push notifications and multi-user access. Mobile app configuration is included with every installation we do.
