The compact 4MP AcuSense bullet
Not every camera position needs a full-size T46 housing. Some need to slip under an eave without dominating the soffit. Some need to sit above a side passage without looking industrial. Some go on cluster home walls where the body corporate has views about external camera size. The Hikvision DS-2CD2T46G2H-2I 2.8mm is the camera we install in those positions.
It is essentially the smaller-bodied sibling of our most-installed 4MP AcuSense bullet. Same chip, same AI, same wide-angle 2.8mm lens, same DarkFighter low-light technology. The IR illumination range is shorter (around 30 metres versus the bigger T46’s 60 metre reach), which is fine because this camera lives in tighter positions where 60 metres of IR is overkill.
What this camera is actually good at
- 4MP resolution. Sharp enough for face identification at conversation distance. Sharp enough to read a number plate at the gate. Sharp enough that the footage is still useful three days later when something turns out to matter.
- Wide 2.8mm lens. Roughly 102° horizontal field of view. Covers a porch, a side passage, or a small back yard from one mount.
- AcuSense onboard AI. Classifies every moving object as human, vehicle, or background. Only humans and vehicles trigger your phone notification. The cats, the dogs, the wind in the trees stay out of your alerts inbox.
- DarkFighter low-light sensor. Usable colour and detail in light levels well below where standard cameras flip to grainy black-and-white.
- 120 dB WDR. Handles bright-into-dark transitions cleanly. Sun behind a shaded patio, a porch light against the night, gate lights bouncing off a wet driveway.
- IP67 weather-sealed housing. Smaller body, same Hikvision build quality. Lives outside in Pretoria summers and winters without complaint.
- H.265+ compression. Twice the recording on the same hard drive compared to older H.264 cameras.
Where this camera belongs on your property
- Under eaves and soffits where the smaller housing is more visually appropriate
- Side passages between the house and the boundary wall
- Cluster home and townhouse exteriors where body corporate aesthetics matter
- Patios, pool areas, and back yards in standard suburban homes
- Carports and garages at close range
If your camera position is a long boundary wall, a perimeter that needs reach, or a driveway over 15 metres, the bigger-bodied DS-2CD2T46G2H-4I with its longer IR range is the more sensible call. Most homes end up running both: the smaller 2I under eaves, the bigger 4I on perimeter walls.
If you want a bit more, or a bit different
- The 4mm version of this same camera swaps the wide-angle for a tighter view. The right call when the camera is more than 8 to 10 metres from what you want to identify.
- The DS-2CD2086G2H-I ColorVu 8MP doubles the resolution and adds full-colour night vision. The right step up when you want maximum detail at the front of a larger home.
- The DS-2CD2646G2HT-IZS 2.8 to 12mm adds a motorised zoom lens for positions that need to flex between wide and tight views.
- For active deterrence (built-in strobe and siren that fire when a person enters the property), the DS-2CD2T46G2-ISU/SL is the right call.
For multi-camera setups, the DS-2CD2T46G2H-2I pairs cleanly with the DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR over a single ethernet run. For everything else (number of cameras for your property type, where they belong, what the install costs) our home CCTV installation guide covers it properly.
Configuration matters more than the spec sheet suggests
A factory-default AcuSense camera will still fire false alerts at every dog walking past, because the detection zones, sensitivity thresholds, and notification rules need to be tuned for the specific property. We do that work as part of every install across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg. Live-tested before we leave the property.
