The motorised-zoom bullet that does the work of two cameras
Most fixed-lens cameras force a compromise. The wide 2.8mm lens sees the whole scene but turns people at distance into a few smudgy pixels. The narrow 4mm lens reaches further but loses the peripheral coverage. On a complex property layout, you end up installing two cameras at one position to cover both jobs.
The Hikvision DS-2CD2646G2HT-IZS solves that with a motorised 2.8 to 12mm zoom lens you control from your phone or the NVR. Wide-angle when you want situational awareness across a yard, parking area, or shopfront. Tight zoom when you want face and number-plate detail at 25 metres. Same camera, same mount, same cable run.
Combined with 4MP resolution and full-colour vision, this is a serious all-rounder. It is the camera we install on positions that genuinely need to flex: large open-plan back gardens, business shopfronts watching both the street and the till area, smallholding gates covering the access road and the yard together.
What this camera is actually good at
- 4MP resolution. Sharper than the 2MP standard, finer detail when zoomed in on faces, vehicles, and number plates.
- Motorised 2.8 to 12mm zoom. Roughly 4x optical zoom range, controlled remotely from the Hik-Connect app or the NVR menu. Auto-focus refocuses every time the zoom changes.
- ColorVu full-colour night vision. Maintains colour rendering across the full zoom range, in light levels well below where standard cameras flip to monochrome.
- AcuSense onboard AI. Human and vehicle classification, regardless of how the lens is currently zoomed.
- 120 dB true WDR. Bright-into-dark transitions handled cleanly.
- Long-range IR illumination. Up to 50 metres for total-darkness coverage, more than the fixed-lens compact cameras.
- IP67 weather-sealed housing. Built for full outdoor mounting in Highveld weather.
- Built-in microphone. Audio captured alongside video.
Where this camera belongs on your property
- Multi-purpose front-of-house positions needing to cover both the gate and the section of street beyond it
- Business shopfronts watching customer flow, the entrance, and the section of pavement outside
- Smallholding gate cameras needing to cover both the gate area and the access road approaching it
- Estate vehicle entry points needing both wide situational view and tight licence-plate identification
- Industrial yard cameras covering both the yard and the gate from a single mount
- Property positions where you genuinely cannot decide between wide and tight and want the option to change later
If you want a step up in identification quality
- The DS-2CD2086G2H-I 8MP ColorVu swaps motorised zoom for a higher-resolution fixed lens. The right call when you know exactly what you want to cover and identification quality is the absolute priority.
- The DS-2CD2087G3-LIY 8MP G3 ColorVu is the latest-generation 8MP ColorVu bullet, also fixed lens.
If you want to compare motorised zoom options at this level
- The DS-2CD2641G0-LIZSU 2.8 to 12mm is the previous-generation 4MP motorised zoom. Lower price, basic motion detection rather than full AcuSense.
- The DS-2CD2646G2-IZS is an alternative G2 motorised zoom at 4MP without ColorVu.
For multi-camera setups, this camera works cleanly with the DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR. Note that motorised-zoom cameras consume more storage when zoomed in (more detail per frame), so plan for at least 2TB of storage on systems including one or more zoom cameras. Our home CCTV installation guide covers storage sizing properly.
Motorised zoom only delivers when you can drive it
The motorised zoom adds a layer of complexity to the user experience: setting preset positions, recall locations, and integration with the Hik-Connect mobile app for remote control. We do that setup work as part of every install, including showing you how to drive the zoom from your phone before we leave. Across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg.
