The affordable AcuSense bullet with reach
The Hikvision DS-2CD2046G2H-I with the 4mm lens is the entry-level 4MP AcuSense bullet for positions where you need usable detail at distance, but the budget will not stretch to the bigger T46 housing. It is the same camera as the wide-angle 2.8mm version, with a tighter 4mm lens that trades peripheral coverage for face and number-plate detail at 8 to 12 metres.
This is a popular pairing in starter 4-camera home packages: the 2.8mm at the front for situational coverage, this 4mm version watching the side passage or a longer back garden where you want to actually identify people, not just register that they were there.
What this camera is actually good at
- 4MP resolution with a 4mm lens. Roughly 84° horizontal view. Tighter scene, more usable detail per person in the frame.
- AcuSense human and vehicle classification. The Hikvision AI chip filters out the cats, the dogs, the wind in the bushes, the moths around the IR LEDs. Only people and vehicles trigger an alert.
- Up to 30m IR illumination. Plenty for residential side passages, small back yards, and most cluster home positions.
- 120 dB WDR. Handles harsh light contrast cleanly. The bright street through a dark gate, the porch light against the night, the headlights bouncing off wet paving.
- DarkFighter low-light sensor. Useful detail in light levels well below where standard cameras give up.
- IP67 weather-sealed. Built for full outdoor mounting in Pretoria summers, Highveld winters, and everything in between.
- H.265+ compression. Doubles your hard drive capacity versus older H.264 systems.
Where this camera belongs on your property
- Side passages watching the gap between the house and the boundary wall
- Medium-length driveways (8 to 12 metres) where the wide lens loses detail at the far end
- Back yards in larger homes mounted at one corner, watching across to the opposite boundary
- Cottages and outbuildings watching the entry door from across the path
- Small business loading bays where you need to identify people moving through
For wider, closer scenes (front yards, patios, back yards in standard suburban homes) the 2.8mm version of this camera is the right call. For longer perimeter walls and driveways over 15 metres, the bigger-bodied DS-2CD2T46G2H-4I 4mm with its 60-metre IR range is the more capable upgrade.
If you want to step up
- The DS-2CD2086G2H-I ColorVu 8MP doubles the pixels and gives you full-colour footage at night. The right call for high-priority positions like the front gate.
- The DS-2CD2087G3-LIY 8MP G3 ColorVu is the latest-generation low-light camera. Even better night performance than the G2H series.
If you want to compare options at this level
- The DS-2CD2041G0-LIU is the predecessor model with basic motion detection rather than full AcuSense classification. Useful when budget is the absolute deciding factor.
- The DS-2CD2046G2-IU/SL takes the same entry-level 4MP body and adds a built-in strobe and siren for active deterrence.
For multi-camera setups, this camera pairs cleanly with the DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR. Our home CCTV installation guide walks through what package sizes look like in practice for different property types.
Configuration is what unlocks the AI
An AcuSense camera left on factory defaults will still fire false alerts at every dog walking past. Detection zones, sensitivity thresholds, schedule rules, and notification settings need to be tuned for your specific property. We do that work as part of every install across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg. Live test before we leave.
Full 3-year Hikvision South Africa warranty through authorised distribution. See the CCTV installation prices page for supply-only and supply-and-install pricing.

How Hikvision AcuSense AI works
