The 4MP camera that talks back
Most CCTV cameras are passive. They watch, they record, they alert your phone, and at that point the responsibility for doing something about it shifts to you, your security company, or SAPS. By the time anyone arrives, the trespasser has had two minutes uninterrupted on your property.
The Hikvision DS-2CD2046G2H-I2U/SL 2.8mm changes that timing. Built into the camera body is a high-intensity white strobe light and an audible siren. When a person enters the camera’s detection zone (after AcuSense AI has confirmed it is actually a person, not a cat or a moth), the strobe fires and the siren sounds. Most opportunistic trespassers turn around immediately. They came expecting a passive camera and got an active deterrent instead.
The 2.8mm wide lens makes this the right call for front-of-house positions: porches, front yards, back gardens, side passages where you want one camera covering the whole scene with the deterrent strobe ready to fire.
What this camera is actually good at
- 4MP resolution. Sharp face and number-plate detail in normal use, plus the recorded footage of the trespasser turning to flee from the strobe.
- Built-in active strobe and siren. Automatically fires when AcuSense classifies a real human entering a configured detection zone. Trespasser flees on their own, often before a security response is even needed.
- AcuSense AI classification. Critical here, because the strobe and siren must only fire on real people. Cats setting off the deterrent at 2am is exactly the situation we are designing against.
- Two-way audio. Built-in microphone and speaker. Talk to a delivery person at the gate from your phone, or shout directly through the camera at someone who should not be on your property.
- Wide 2.8mm lens. 102° horizontal view. Covers a yard, porch, or side passage from a single mount.
- Up to 30m IR illumination. Total-darkness coverage when the strobe is not active.
- IP67 weather-sealed and IK10 vandal-resistant housing. Designed to survive both Pretoria weather and someone trying to disable it physically.
Where this camera belongs on your property
- Front gates and driveways as the first-line active deterrent on a property
- Side passages and pedestrian access points where the strobe firing visibly is the loudest message you can send
- Small business shopfronts after hours, where the strobe and siren give you a meaningful response before anyone has to drive there
- Cluster home patios where neighbours can also hear and react to the siren
- Cottage and outbuilding entrances particularly when separated from the main house
If you want a step up in capability
- The DS-2CD2086G2H-I ColorVu 8MP doubles the pixels and adds full-colour night footage, but loses the active deterrent. The right call when identification quality matters more than active response.
- The DS-2CD2087G3-LIY 8MP G3 ColorVu is the latest-generation 8MP low-light camera, again without the active strobe.
- The DS-2CD2T46G2H-IS2U/SL 2.8mm is the bigger-bodied premium version of this camera. Same active deterrent, longer 60-metre IR range, beefier housing. The right choice for boundary walls and properties where the camera needs to reach further.
If you want to compare at this level
- The DS-2CD2041G0-LIU is a more affordable predecessor without active deterrent or full AcuSense classification. Useful when budget is the absolute constraint.
- The DS-2CD2046G2H-I 4mm is the same entry-level 4MP body in a tighter lens, without the active strobe. The right call when you want AcuSense at distance but the active deterrent is not the priority.
- The DS-2CD2046G2-IU/SL is the older predecessor of this exact camera. Still a solid AcuSense + strobe option, slightly less recent generation.
For complete home or small business setups, this camera pairs cleanly with the DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR. The home CCTV installation guide covers what works for different property sizes.
The strobe and siren only work when configured properly
An active-deterrent camera that fires its strobe at every cat is worse than no strobe at all. Configuration is critical: AcuSense detection zones drawn precisely, sensitivity calibrated for the property, schedule rules so the strobe only fires when you want it to (typically at night or when the property is unoccupied), and the alarm trigger logic set up so security response and homeowner notifications happen in the right sequence.

How Hikvision active-deterrent cameras work
Active-deterrent cameras combine AcuSense AI with audible siren and white-light strobe to deter intruders the moment they are detected.
