The boundary-wall and long-driveway specialist
Stand at the back of a long driveway or alongside a 30 metre boundary wall, and the difference between a wide lens and a narrow one becomes obvious. The wide lens captures everything but turns a person at distance into a few smudgy pixels. The narrow lens trades some peripheral coverage for actual usable detail at range. Faces. Clothing. Number plates.
The Hikvision DS-2CD2T46G2H-4I with the 4mm lens is the version of our most-installed 4MP AcuSense bullet that we mount on long driveways, perimeter walls, and any position where the camera is more than 10 metres from the people you want to identify. It is the same camera body, the same AcuSense AI, the same DarkFighter low-light performance as the 2.8mm version. The lens is what makes it different.
What this camera is actually good at
- 4MP resolution with a tighter 4mm lens. Roughly an 84° horizontal field of view. Less peripheral coverage, but anyone within that field is captured at usable detail. The right trade-off for longer distances.
- DarkFighter low-light performance. Pulls detail out of light levels where standard cameras give you a black square with two glowing eyes. Useful on perimeter walls without dedicated boundary lighting.
- AcuSense human and vehicle classification. The chip inside the camera filters out the cats, the bats, the dogs at the gate, the wind in the trees. Your phone only buzzes for actual humans and vehicles.
- 120 dB true WDR. Handles the hard contrast scenarios that wreck cheaper cameras: a bright street behind a dark driveway, headlights sweeping into a shaded patio, sun coming over a wall in late afternoon.
- H.265+ compression. Roughly doubles your effective hard drive capacity. A 2TB drive that would normally hold 14 days of footage stretches to 25 to 28 days at full 4MP recording.
- IP67 weather-sealed housing. Designed for full outdoor mounting in Highveld weather. Hailstorms, dust, summer thunderstorms.
Where this camera belongs on your property
- Long boundary walls alongside an alley, an open field, or another property’s vacant stand
- Driveways longer than 15 metres where the wide-angle 2.8mm lens loses too much detail at the far end
- Smallholding perimeters watching a fence line or vehicle access road
- Industrial yards and storage areas where you need to identify people moving through a defined zone rather than survey a scene
For shorter distances and wider scenes (front yards, patios, the back of a standard suburban home) the 2.8mm version of this same camera is the more sensible call. Most properties end up with both: the 2.8mm taking in the front, the 4mm watching the long perimeter walls.
If you want a bit more, or a bit different
- The DS-2CD2086G2H-I ColorVu 8MP doubles the pixels and adds full-colour night vision. The right call for the front gate or driveway of a larger home where you want clothing colour and faces at night.
- The DS-2CD2646G2HT-IZS 2.8 to 12mm swaps the fixed lens for a motorised zoom. Useful when one camera needs to handle both a wide view and a tight zoom on a specific area.
- The DS-2CD2T46G2-ISU/SL takes the same 4MP bullet and adds a built-in strobe and siren for active deterrence. Trespasser steps onto the property, the camera flashes and alerts.
- For a smaller, lower-profile housing where the bigger T46 body is overkill, the DS-2CD2T46G2H-2I 4mm is the compact alternative.
For multi-camera homes and smallholdings, this camera pairs natively with the DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR over a single ethernet cable carrying both data and power. Our home CCTV installation guide covers what a properly designed setup looks like by property type.
Getting it to deliver what it promises
Hikvision AI cameras only deliver the false-alarm reduction the brochure promises when the detection zones, sensitivity thresholds, and notification rules are properly configured for your property. We do that as part of every installation across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg. Every camera is fully tuned and live-tested before we leave.
Supply-only buyers get phone or WhatsApp configuration support after purchase. All cameras carry the full 3-year Hikvision South Africa warranty through authorised distribution. See our CCTV installation prices page for what supply-only and supply-and-install look like.
