The 16-channel Turbo HD DVR for serious analogue installs
If you have an existing analogue CCTV system and the wiring is staying in place, the recorder is where the upgrade really happens. Install a current-generation DVR and suddenly your old coax cabling delivers 5MP detail, AcuSense AI classification, H.265+ storage efficiency, and the same Hik-Connect mobile app experience as a brand-new IP system. The Hikvision iDS-7216HQHI-M2/S is the recorder we install on those upgrades.
16 channels of Turbo HD camera input over standard BNC/coax connections. AcuSense AI onboard, classifying humans and vehicles on the channels where the camera supports it. Two hard-drive bays for substantial recording capacity. Two-way audio. Hik-Connect cloud and mobile app integration. The recorder that turns a tired old analogue system into something genuinely modern, without touching a single cable.
What this DVR is actually good at
- 16 channels of Turbo HD input. Plenty of room for medium and larger residential systems, full smallholdings, small-business multi-camera setups, and commercial installations.
- AcuSense AI on supporting cameras. The cat-detected-at-2am problem solved at the recorder level, on every Turbo HD camera that supports the feature. Mobile app alerts only fire on confirmed human or vehicle activity.
- Up to 5MP camera support. Compatible with the full current Hikvision Turbo HD camera range including ColorVu, varifocal, panoramic, and active-deterrent units.
- H.265+ video compression. Doubles your recording capacity versus older H.264 systems. A 4TB drive holds roughly 30 days of recording on most 16-camera setups.
- Two SATA hard-drive bays. Up to 10TB per bay for substantial archive depth. We typically install 4TB or 8TB Hikvision-rated surveillance drives.
- Hik-Connect cloud integration. Live view, playback, and notifications on iPhone and Android via the official Hik-Connect app. No port forwarding required.
- Two-way audio through compatible cameras for direct verbal challenge or visitor communication.
- HDMI output up to 4K for sharp local monitoring on a TV or dedicated monitor.
- Hybrid input support allowing some IP cameras to be added to the same recorder, useful when a partial upgrade includes new IP cameras alongside existing Turbo HD.
Where this DVR belongs
- Existing analogue system upgrades wanting current-generation capability over existing coax
- Medium and larger homes running 8 to 16 cameras across the property
- Smallholdings with cameras on the house, gates, and outbuildings
- Small business multi-camera installations on Turbo HD infrastructure
- Commercial sites with extended camera coverage
If you want fewer channels or a step down
- The iDS-7116HQHI-M1/S is the 16-channel single-bay version, useful when 4TB of storage is sufficient.
- The iDS-7208HQHI-M1/XT is the 8-channel version for smaller installations.
- The DS-7104HGHI-M1 is the entry-level 4-channel for starter setups.
If you want a step up
- The iDS-7216HQHI-M2/XT is the same 16-channel platform with extended feature set.
- The iDS-7232HQHI-M2/XT is the 32-channel version for very large installations.
- The DS-7116HGHI-M1 is the alternative 16-channel single-bay option without AcuSense.
If you are building a new IP-based system
- The DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR is the IP-network equivalent for new IP-based installations. Different cabling, different camera category, but the right call when you are building from scratch on IP infrastructure.

- Undercover / interior turret: DS-2CE76D0T-EXIPF (ColorVu turret)
Installation, configuration, and the things that matter
A DVR straight out of the box is just a hard drive in a metal case. The actual work is the configuration: detection zones drawn on every camera, AcuSense sensitivity tuned for the property, Hik-Connect mobile setup with the right notification rules, recording schedules matched to how the property operates, motion-triggered recording configured to balance storage against coverage, and remote-access security hardened so the system is not exposed to the wider internet. We do all of that as standard on every install across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg. Live-tested with real-person detection and false-positive checks before we leave.
