The Wi-Fi bullet for cable-free positions
Most Hikvision cameras require a Cat6 ethernet cable run from the NVR to the camera position, carrying both data and power over a single line. That works beautifully for new installations where the cabling can be planned and routed during construction or as part of a proper retrofit. It does not work as easily for finished interiors where running new cable would mean lifting tiles, cutting plaster, or damaging joinery.
The Hikvision DS-2CV2021G2-IDW is the Wi-Fi solution to that problem. The camera connects to your home or business Wi-Fi network, with only a power cable required at the mounting position. For locations within Wi-Fi range and with access to a power outlet, this is the camera we install when running ethernet would be impractical.
The trade-off is that Wi-Fi is inherently less reliable than wired ethernet, so we use this camera for supplementary coverage rather than primary perimeter security. Holiday-home check-in cameras, ad-hoc additional coverage in finished homes, quick-deploy positions for events: all natural fits.
What this camera is actually good at
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity. No ethernet cable required from NVR to camera position.
- 2MP resolution. Sharp enough for general supplementary coverage.
- AcuSense-style human and vehicle detection. Filters out false alerts even on supplementary cameras.
- Built-in microphone. Audio captured alongside video.
- IR illumination up to 30 metres. Total-darkness coverage at residential distances.
- Hik-Connect app integration. Same mobile app as the rest of the Hikvision range.
- Indoor or weather-protected outdoor use. Less robust than the IP67 wired bullets, designed primarily for indoor and sheltered outdoor positions.
Where this camera belongs on your property
- Holiday and second homes for check-in coverage when cabling a full system is not justified by usage
- Finished-interior retrofits where running new ethernet cable would damage tiles, joinery, or plaster
- Indoor supplementary cameras in lounges, dining areas, or hallways where a wired install is impractical
- Domestic worker accommodation and outbuildings within Wi-Fi range of the main house
- Quick-deploy event coverage needing reliable temporary CCTV without permanent installation
- Cluster home and apartment situations where ethernet installation is not permitted by the body corporate
Important: Wi-Fi cameras are supplementary, not primary security
We do not recommend Wi-Fi cameras as primary perimeter security on a property. Wi-Fi can drop, the network can be congested at peak times, and the connection between camera and NVR is inherently less reliable than wired ethernet. For your front gate, your back-yard perimeter, and any position where a security incident is likely to happen, a wired Hikvision IP bullet like the DS-2CD2046G2H-I 4mm or the DS-2CD2041G0-LIU is the right answer.
If you want to compare at this level
- The DS-2CD1023G0E-I 2.8mm is the wired entry-level alternative when ethernet cabling is feasible.
- The DS-2CD1123G0E-I 2.8mm is the wired dome equivalent.
- For genuinely Wi-Fi-friendly residential coverage, the IMOU Wi-Fi camera range includes purpose-built indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi cameras with the IMOU Life mobile app, which many homeowners find more intuitive for Wi-Fi-only setups.

Wi-Fi setup is more complex than wired install
Wi-Fi camera setup involves the camera, the home router, the NVR, and the Hik-Connect app all communicating reliably. We do that setup work as part of every install across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg, including signal-strength testing at the camera position before final mounting.
