The affordable AcuSense bullet for budget-conscious installs
The most expensive CCTV camera is the one that gets muted. We have replaced enough cheap, generic, false-alarm-firing cameras over the years to know that the brand and the AI matter more than the unit price. The Hikvision DS-2CD2046G2H-I is the entry into the Hikvision AcuSense range. It is what we recommend when the budget will not stretch to the bigger T46 series, but the homeowner still wants the AI that actually filters out the false alerts.
You give up some IR range (around 30 metres versus 60 on the bigger bullets) and the housing is more compact. What you keep is what actually matters: 4MP detail, the AcuSense chip that classifies humans and vehicles, weatherproof outdoor build, and the H.265+ compression that doubles your hard drive capacity.
What this camera is actually good at
- 4MP resolution. Sharp enough for face identification at close range and number plates at the gate.
- AcuSense onboard AI. Genuine Hikvision human and vehicle classification, not a software tweak. The cats stay out of your phone, the burglar does not.
- Up to 30m IR illumination. Plenty of reach for residential and small-business positions in total darkness.
- 120 dB WDR. Bright-into-dark transitions handled cleanly.
- IP67 weather-sealed. Outdoor use in Highveld weather, all year, for years.
- H.265+ compression. Twice the storage on the same drive compared to older H.264.
Lens options: 2.8mm or 4mm
- The 2.8mm wide-angle version covers a 102° field of view from a single mount. The right call for back yards, side passages, and patios.
- The 4mm tighter version trades peripheral coverage for usable detail at distance. The right call for positions over 8 metres from the subject.
Where this camera belongs on your property
- Cluster homes and townhouses wanting genuine AI without the larger camera footprint
- Starter 4-camera home packages covering the front gate, front door, back yard, and one side passage
- Small business shopfronts and back rooms where the budget needs to stretch across multiple cameras
- Granny flats, cottages, and outbuildings as supplementary cameras to a main system
- Replacement of failed older cameras in existing installations, where you want a step up to AcuSense without rebuilding the whole system
If you want to step up
- The DS-2CD2086G2H-I 8MP ColorVu doubles the pixels and adds full-colour night vision. The right call for the front gate of larger homes.
- The DS-2CD2087G3-LIY 8MP G3 ColorVu is the latest-generation 8MP option.
If you want active deterrent
- The DS-2CD2046G2-IU/SL adds a built-in strobe and siren on the same 4MP body.
If you want to compare at this level
- The DS-2CD2041G0-LIU is the older 4MP without AcuSense, with built-in audio.
- The DS-2CD2021G1-I is the 2MP step down for supplementary positions.
For 4 to 8 camera home setups, this camera works cleanly with the DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR (room to expand later) or a smaller 4 or 8-channel Hikvision NVR if you know the system will not grow.
Configuration matters even more on entry-level cameras
An entry-level AcuSense camera that has been properly configured is significantly more useful than a premium AcuSense camera left on factory defaults. We do the configuration work on every install across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg.
