The active-deterrent 4MP bullet with reach
The 2.8mm version of this camera is the right tool for compact front-gate positions. The DS-2CD2T46G2H-IS2U/SL with the 4mm lens is what you install when the gate is further from the house, the driveway is long, or the perimeter wall stretches further than the wide lens can resolve identification-grade detail. Same active strobe, same siren, same Hikvision AcuSense AI, same two-way audio. Tighter lens.
This is a popular pairing on smallholdings and large stands: the wide-angle 2.8mm camera at the immediate gate, this 4mm version watching the long stretch of driveway or the perimeter wall section where you need to actually identify someone at 15 to 20 metres, not just register that they are there.
What this camera is actually good at
- 4MP resolution with a 4mm lens. Roughly 84° horizontal view. Less peripheral coverage, more identification-grade detail per person in the frame at distance.
- Built-in strobe and siren. Triggered by AcuSense human classification, configurable to fire only at the times and conditions you specify (typically at night or when armed).
- Two-way audio. Talk to delivery drivers, contractors, or trespassers directly through the camera from your phone.
- Up to 60m IR illumination. Long-throw infrared for the kind of total-darkness coverage that long driveways and perimeter walls actually need.
- AcuSense onboard AI. The classification engine that makes the strobe usable. Without this, you would mute the active deterrent within a fortnight.
- 120 dB true WDR. Handles harsh light contrast cleanly.
- IP67 weather-sealed and IK10 vandal-resistant housing. Built for exposed positions where the camera might be a target itself.
- Alarm input/output terminals. Integrate with your electric fence, alarm system, or external sirens.
Where this camera belongs on your property
- Long driveways on larger homes and smallholdings, where the camera at the gate cannot see clearly down to the house
- Perimeter walls bordering open ground needing reach down a section of wall, with active deterrent against climbers
- Smallholding gate-mounted positions watching the gate, the access road, and the bordering perimeter together at 4mm focal length
- Estate boom gate approaches watching the approach road into the entry point, where vehicle identification at distance matters
- Industrial site perimeters watching loading bays and vehicle entries at distance, with active deterrent for after-hours intrusion
If you want a different focal length or capability
- The 2.8mm version of this same camera is the right call for tighter, wider scenes. Front gates, porches, smaller properties.
- The DS-2CD2086G2H-I ColorVu 8MP doubles the resolution and gives full-colour night footage, without the strobe. The right call when identification quality is the absolute priority.
- The DS-2CD2646G2HT-IZS 2.8 to 12mm swaps the fixed lens for a motorised zoom. Useful when the property layout means one camera needs to flex between wide situational view and tight zoom.
If you want to compare at this level
- The DS-2CD2T46G2-ISU/SL is the older T-series model with strobe at a lower price point.
- The DS-2CD2T46G2H-2I 4mm is the smaller-bodied passive camera (no strobe), the right call when active deterrent is not needed and you want a more discreet form factor.
For multi-camera homes and smallholdings, this camera pairs cleanly with the DS-7616NXI-K2 16-channel NVR. Our home CCTV installation guide covers how active-deterrent and passive cameras work together in a properly designed system.
Strobe and siren are powerful when configured, dangerous when not
The detection zones, sensitivity thresholds, schedule rules, and alarm trigger logic determine whether this camera is a security asset or a noise complaint waiting to happen. Configuration matters more on active-deterrent cameras than on any other type. We do the configuration work as standard on every install across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg. Live-tested for both real-person detection and false-positive resistance before we leave.
