The entry-level 4-channel NVR for compact installations
Not every home needs a 16-channel commercial-grade recorder humming away in a cabinet. Many South African townhouses, cluster homes, and small cottages need exactly 4 cameras (front gate, front door, back yard, side passage) and never need more. For those installations, the Hikvision DS-7104NI-Q1 is the right answer.
It is a compact 4-channel network video recorder, deliberately scaled down for small installations. Quiet operation. Low power consumption (significantly easier to run on a modest UPS through load shedding). Single SATA bay with up to 8TB of storage capacity. Same Hik-Connect mobile app, same H.265+ compression, same Hikvision build quality as the bigger units, in a form factor that fits properly into a small home install.
What this NVR is actually good at
- 4 channels of IP camera capacity. Supports up to 6MP per camera, with sensible decoding capacity for live view and playback.
- H.265+ compression. Doubles your effective storage. A 2TB drive holds roughly 4 weeks of 4-camera continuous recording.
- Hik-Connect mobile app integration. Live view, playback, push notifications, multi-user access from your phone.
- Compact form factor. Fits into a small cabinet or shelf installation.
- Quiet operation. Suitable for installation in living areas without noise complaint.
- Low power consumption. Easy to power through load shedding on a modest UPS.
- HDMI and VGA output. Connect to any standard monitor or TV.
- Single SATA bay. Up to 8TB capacity, sufficient for 4-camera systems.
Where this NVR is the right answer
- Townhouses and cluster homes where 4 cameras genuinely cover everything that matters
- Small flats and apartments with body corporate-friendly camera deployment
- Granny flats and cottages as standalone CCTV systems separate from the main house
- Small offices and consulting rooms with simple 4-camera coverage
- Holiday homes with basic deterrent-grade coverage
Important: this is the non-PoE version
The DS-7104NI-Q1 does not have a built-in PoE switch. Each camera requires either a separate PoE switch or individual PoE injectors at the recorder end. For most fresh installs, the DS-7104NI-Q1/4P with the built-in 4-port PoE switch is the more sensible choice. The non-PoE version makes sense when an existing PoE switch is already on site, or when the installation involves Wi-Fi cameras that need network connectivity but not PoE power.
If you want to step up
- The DS-7108NI-Q1 doubles the channel count to 8, useful when the property might grow beyond 4 cameras.
- The DS-7608NXI-K2 is the 8-channel option with full AcuSense smart search support, the next generation up from the Q1 series.
If you want PoE built in
- The DS-7104NI-Q1/4P is the same recorder with a built-in 4-port PoE switch.
- The DS-7108NI-Q1 8-channel non-PoE.
Camera pairings
For 4-camera home installs, this NVR pairs well with our default residential bullet, the DS-2CD2T46G2H-4I 4MP AcuSense, or the more affordable DS-2CD2046G2H-I 4mm in starter packages. Our home CCTV installation guide covers complete 4-camera package design.
Properly installed and configured
Even small installs deserve proper configuration. We do detection-zone setup, mobile app integration, multi-user access, and load-shedding UPS sizing on every install across Pretoria East, Centurion, Midrand, and Johannesburg.
